Artur Mateusz Garbas

Guest of the Opera

The Polish-German baritone Artur Mateusz Garbas started his bachelor studies at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden with Prof. Hendrikje Wangemann in 2015. Moreover, he has attended master classes led by Silvana Bazzoni-Bartoli, Marek Rzepka and Lucas Meachum. He has garnered a number of accolades at competitions, including at the International Antonín Dvořák Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary in 2017: second prize in the Junior category, the National Theatre Opera Prize and the Antonín Dvořák Society Prize for the best performance of a Dvořák song. He has also received the Gustav Mahler Prize for his performance at the Music of Thousands - Mahler Jihlava festival, the Milan Bürger Prize for his interpretation of one of Dvořák's Biblical Songs and the prize for the best performance of a Mozart aria. He won the Junior category at the 45th Bundeswettbewerb Gesang in Berlin, received the Walter und Charlotte Hamel Stiftung scholarship, as well as the Deutschlandstipendium for 2018/19. Artur Mateusz Garbas has performed to acclaim at the Silesian Philharmonic hall in Katowice, the Hala stulecia in Wrocław, the Konzertfoyer of the Komische Oper in Berlin and at the Mahler Jihlava festival (2018). In 2017 and 2018, he appeared at the Oper Leipzig, portraying the roles of De Brienne in Charles Gounod’s Cinq-Mars, the Cappadocian in Richard Strauss’s Salome and Billy Jackrabbit in Giacomo Puccini’s La fanciulla del West. He has also performed the role of Don Alonso in Dresden’s Hochschule für Musik’s production of W. A. Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
